Mika Immonen has won the 2009 World 10-Ball Championship in an amazing 11-6 win over Lee Van Corteza who was the Filipino favorite.

Immonen was slow on the start as Corteza took the lead however Immonen came back to win the 10-ball World Championship for 2009 after her tied them up at 2-2.

Ok, we haven't been updating everyone as much as we should on the pool tournaments for 2009 but it's becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with all of the changes to scheduled events across the year. Particularly when we now have previous years' tournaments happening in the same year!

Here's some detail on a few of the 2009 world pool championships;

- The World 10-Ball Championship are on at the moment as you may already know in Manila. Running from November 25 - 30th for 2009 at the World Trade Center Metro Manila in the Philippines.

At the time of writing this the World 10-Ball Champs is down to the final four with the semi-finals showing Corteza facing Alcaide and Lining up against Immonen.

- The WPA World Junior Championships for 2009 were held this month and the WPA announced two new world champions were created with Ruslan Chinakhov of Russia and Keng-Chun Lin of Taipei becoming the new WPA World Junior Champions.

Qatar International Open 9-Ball Champion

The Qatar International Open 9-ball has been running from June 27 to July 7 2009;

Mika Immonen from the country of Finland won the 2009 Qatar International Open 9-Ball championship on July 6. Mika beat Ko Pin Yi of Chinese Taipei 13-9 in a competitive final 9 ball championship game.

Earlier this year Peter Ebdon won the Bank of Beijing 2009 World Snooker China Open.

8 Ball World Champs have been postponed

The WPA released last month that the WPA WORLD 8-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP 2009 which was scheduled for April has been postponed to later in the year.

A new date is yet be decided.

The global economical situation has been a strong factor in the postponement of this event.

World Pool Championship 2009

Usually I would be able to add a post about what's going on with the latest event and potentially with the World Pool Championship itself but having a look around a few of the major sites it appears that there is a lot of confusion about whether or not the event is actually going to happen or not since last years one has still not happened.

The WPA site does not have any updates since late December 2008 after having announced that the world pool championships were going to be held in early 2009 however it looks like there is some type of in-fighting between the different pool and billiards associations about the event as well as the players associations jumping in the mix as well.

New Mens World Pool Ranking System for 2009

The WPA have just announced that a new ranking system for the mens world pool ranking will be launched effective from the start of 2009.

One of the key things to look at are the how an event qualifies to be part of the ranking;

The criteria adopted for an event to qualify as a ranking tournament is as follows:- a) open to all players who are members of WPA affiliated organisations;
and b) offer minimum added prize money of USD100,000.

In summary:

- Points are retained by players for 12 months or until the event is held again unless the event is not held in the following year.

- Five events so far but they're hoping for two more in 2009.

- Incentives to encourage players to play in all of the events are being finalised.

- A player MUST be a member of either the WPA or an associated body to be a part of the rankings.

[In many] cases the players do not pay any entry fee, but are being offered good prize money, and to do it without even having to be a member of an organisation is no longer going to be acceptable.

- If you're not a member then you'll need to become one otherwise your points earned so far will be removed and you can't get them back even when you subsequently become a member.

Darren Appleton Wins World 10 Ball Championships

The inaugural World 10 Ball Champs (WTBC), run over last week at the PICC, were won by Darren "Dynamite" Appleton from the UK who takes away the $100,000 first prize money.

Wu Chia-ching of China fought hard for what has been described as one of the most thrilling finals there have been at a WPA event.

Mens World 9-ball Champs 2008 Postponed!

If you haven't heard about it, the WPA Men's World 9-Ball Champs have been postponed until 2009.

Does that make sense to anyone?

MatchroomSport gave this statement;

the 2008 WPA World Pool Championship will not now be happening in November of this year. Instead, it is hoped that the event will take place in the early part of next year, with the 2009 World Championship taking place in late 2009

US Open 9-Ball Championships 2008

I you haven't heard about it (maybe you were stuck under a rock) the US Open 9-Ball Championships are set to be held next month (October 2008) in Chesapeake, VA.

The championships will run from the 19/10/2008 to the 25/10/2008 and are part of the BCA Federation.

For clarification, this event is part of the Official World Tour.

Blackball World Championships 2008

FRANCISCO Bustamante set up a mouth-watering last 16 contest with fellow Filipino Alex Pagulayan.

Bustamante sealed his place in the fourth round with a thrilling 10-8 victory against Holland's Nick van den Berg in one of the best matches of the 2007 Philippines World Pool Championship so far.

The host nation has the largest contingent of players left in the competition and, with Bustamante and Pagulayan meeting on Friday, are also the only country to have at least one man guaranteed of appearing in the quarter-finals.

With another sell-out arena crowd at the Araneta Coliseum, Quezon City, Manila, popular Filipino Bustamante trailed 4-0 to the young Dutchman before gaining control of the table and running into a 9-4 lead.

Bustamante though, missed a 3 ball into the top left hand pocket when just a few shots from victory and van den Berg grabbed his chance.

He won rack after rack, utilizing the soft break and at 8-9 down looked the favourite to win. However, a rare dry break scuppered his chances and Bustamante cleared to the 8 ball before van den Berg, in a sporting gesture, threw his white towel onto the table and embraced his opponent.

"When I missed that 3 ball I thought I�ve got no more shots in this game. The table was easy breaking and everything was in his control.

"When it was 9-8 I thought I had no more chance but got lucky when he had no ball on the break

"I'm very lucky to be in the last 16 but will try my best as I�m playing the small guy next - Alex Pagulayan!"

Van den Berg put on a brave face at his post match press conference but his pain was apparent. I feel terrible right now. There was nothing I could do and even at 9-7 down I felt I had the best chance," he said.

"I was not nervous the whole time. In fact was more nervous on Table 7 yesterday but if you want to beat Busti you cannot miss any balls," he added.

Also flying the Filipino flag were young guns Roberto Gomez and Joven Bustamante who both won through against Taiwanese opposition.

Bustamante (no relation) beat former champ Wu Chia-ching 10-8 on the TV table while Gomez pounded former two-time champion Chao Fong-pang 10-2. The lone American left in the competition is Corey Deuel following the demise of a lackluster Shane Van Boening.

Deuel showed tremendous heart coming from 9-5 down to get the better of three-time Asian Tour winner Chang Jung-ling of Taiwan. His reward is a match-up with another dangerous Chinese Taipei player, Kuo Po-cheng, a runner-up in this event in 2005.

European No.1 Konstantin Stepanov looked impressive in beating local hope Jeff De Luna 10-5. De Luna is a real crowd pleaser but is often too brave on his shot selection and the 24-year-old Muscovite was too composed for him.

Another Eastern European, Vilmos Foldes, put paid to Shane Van Boening's championship aspirations with a 10-8 win on Table 4. Foldes is the 2003 World Junior Champion and will face Lu Hui-chan who eliminated Poland�s Radoslaw Babica from the competition.

Last year's runner-up Ralf Souquet also exited stage left as Niels Feijen took him down 10-2. Souquet was suffering from a bad back but Feijen, who was a quarter-finalist in this event in 2001, looks a good outside chance.

Two English players are through to Friday's last 16 shake-up. Daryl Peach eliminated qualifier Lee Kun-fang's, a finalist in this event in 1997, on Table 4 and now faces Germany's Harry Stolka on Friday.

If European form is anything to go by, Peach is ranked No.2 on the EPBF rankings while Stolka is back at No.31.

Manchester's Karl Boyes, playing in his first World Championship, came back from 8-5 down to win against bespectacled Korean Ryu Seung-woo. Boyes, a former top English 8 ball player, can look ahead to a do-or-die struggle against European No.1 Konstantin Stepanov (Russia).

Play moves to just two tables on Friday as the races increase to 11.

World Pool Champs Games

Turns out there's a world pool champs game (from the 2004 world champs) available on almost any format of game that you can imagine.

The game is available through GameSpot and was released a few years ago but still has excellent game play. GameSpot gave it a 6.7 out of 10 on its review page;

Though its basic gameplay mechanics aren't bad, WCP 2004's biggest asset is its gameplay depth. At its core, the game features several variations of the game of pool, including 8 Ball, 9 Ball, and snooker, as well as the more traditional, standard game of pool. Each of these games can be played in either single game or tournament form--except for snooker, which can only be played in a single game form. You can designate the number of frames in each game for a single round--all the way up to a best of 17 match--and you can customize features like location, table type, ball set, and the rules of the game.

Format changed for 2007 Pool World Champs

MATCHROOM Sport have (announced) a change in the format of the 2007 World Pool Championship in Philippines.

Double elimination play will be introduced for the first time in the nine years that the UK-based sports promotion company has been promoting the event.

Once again there will be 128 players competing in the tournament, which will be held in Manila from November 3 to November 11, and everyone will be aiming to follow in the footsteps of 2006 winner Ronnie Alcano (pictured right).

However, the old round-robin format has been replaced by a first round consisting of 16 groups of eight players, which will split the field from 128 to 64 competitors before the single-elimination knock-out phase.

This is quite a large change for the format of the pool world champs. Hopefully the new format will allow a fair and easy level of play for all players in the game. With changes of this size there are many questions and there are many players who will complain that is does not suit their particular style as well as it may for others. Hopefully all will turn out Ok as the players get into their matches when the champs start.

The eight players in each group will play a total of 10 matches between them. Two successive wins will see them into the last 64 while two straight defeats will see them eliminated of the tournament.

The final set of matches in the group will feature players with one win and one defeat fighting it out to stay in the competition. All first round matches will be a race to nine racks with the winner breaking.

Each group will be played out over one day on two tables and the first round matches will be completed over four days from Saturday, November 3 to Tuesday, November 6.

I came across a PSP game today which is based around the 2007 World Pool Champs which I hadn't seen before. World Pool Championship 2007 (also known by the names World Pool Challenge 2007 and World Snooker Championship 2007) lets players setup their own characters to play in games across a range of world cups. The game is produced by IGN.
